Lynn
  1. Irish: reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Fhloinn and Ó Fhloinn.
  2. Scottish: variant of Lyne
  3. English: habitational name from any of several places so called in Norfolk, in particular King’s Lynn, an important center of the medieval wool trade. The place name is probably from an Old Welsh word cognate with Gaelic linn ‘pool’, ‘stream’.

    Historic Pittsburgh:

Andrew Lynn Jr. was a man of local note, and among other things was distinguished for having served as Justice of the Peace for 40 years. He built in 1790 a stone mansion, fashioned after the one built by Col. Edward Cook's. in 1772, but it did not turn out to be as durable as Cook's. The latter stands yet and serves it's original purpose, while Lynn's abandoned as human habitation in 1866, is fast failing to ruin. Near the Lynn mansion stands a famous locust tree under whose wide spreading Branch's Gen. George Washington, Andrew Lynn and Col. Edward Cook are said to have met and tarried for some time in social intercourse.

Adjoining Andrew Lynn Jr., on the river lived a colored man known as London Derry, who in company with Andrew Lynn and about 60 others went on a land-looking expedition to Marshall County, VA. They were attacked en route by a body of Indians, and compelled to seek safety in a flight which included a swimming of the Ohio. Lynn's escape was so narrow he lost a portion of his scalp. While Derry, saved himself by burrowing beneath the roots of a tree..

History of Fayette County, by Franklin Ellis, Philadelphia, L H Everts and Company, 1882, p549 Franklin Township, Fayette County, Penna

Among the earliest settlers in Franklin township may be reckoned on William Rittenhouse, a Jerseyman who came in as early certainly as 1777, with his wife and child and located upon a tract of land lying upon the western side of the township. As to the record of his experience for a few years after he came, not much can be learned.

It may be stated, however, that in 1795 he was living on the place now owned by Matthew Arison and in the house now Mr Arison's residence. He kept tavern in that house, which was in its day a favorite halting place for travelers to whom landlord Rittenhouse would, when in the mood, relate his brief but adventurous experiences during the Revolution in which he served as a fifer for the space of a year, from 1776 to 1777.

Upon the site of his farm there was at an earlier date and Indian village and graveyard, and tradition adds, in the village resided a chief of some note who more than once held important councils there with other dignataries of his race. The plowshare for the husbandman has in recent times unearthed many an Indian relic such as arrow heads, stone hatchets, and the like.

After a while Rittenhouse bought land adjoining his tract and skirting what is called the Lazy Hollow Road. Of that land Isaac Quick was an owner before Rittenhouse and report has it that it was from the circumstances of Isaac Quick's extradordinary indolence that the hollow mentioned was given the name of Lazy.

A little east of Aaron Lynn's present residence, Rittenhouse built a tavern and leased it to John Freeman who came from New Jersey and settled first in Franklin on what is now the Radlinghofer place.

The thoroughfare was the mainly traveled road between Brownsville and Connellsville, and Freeman's was probably a busy center at times. How long he kept the place the place is not known, but the old tavern stand now in ruins still marks the spot, a reminder of the days when Boniface welcomed with hearty hospitality the weary wayfarer, cheering as well as sustaining him with whatever fat that part of the land produced. Amos Emmens also is said to have kept tavern on the Lazy Hollow Road, but just where is not known.

Mr Rittenhouse was much devoted to the encouragement of religious aswell as secular education and at an early day built a school house on his farm, where in Samuel Blaney, a famous teacher in his day, taught the children of these pioneers their early steps in the paths of learning.

William Rittenhouse died on the Arison farm in 1815. Of his large family of thirteen children, the only one now living is the widow of Ayers Lynn, an old lady of eighty two years. Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Fayette County by Gresham and
                Wiley, 1889, p320

Charles Call (deceased) was born in Wood county, Ohio. His educational
advantages were limited on account of the scarcity of schools in the
                section where he was reared.

His father, John Call, a native of Ohio, was a very prominent stock
dealer of his day. He bought horses, cattle and sheep in Ohio, and would
drive them to Baltimore to market. For many years he followed this
business. In about 1832 or 1833 he started from home with a drove of
horses destined for Baltimore, and was never heard of afterward. His
family removed to Pennsylvania and settled at Greensboro, Greene county,
Penna. As soon as Charles Call was old enough he went to work as a tender
boy in the glass factory operated at that place. He afterward learned the
glassblower's trade, and followed that business most of his life.
His mother belonged to the Minor family, who were of the earliest
families that settled in Greene county. Her brother, Theophilus Minor,
was a well known river man, and with him Charles Call ran on the river
                for some time.

Charles Call was married to Miss Hannah R Lynn. They reared a family of
seven children. (For his ancestry see a sketch of Mr Lynn's family in
this book.) Mr Call was prominent as a Mason; he served several years as
justice of the peace of the borough of Belle Vernon; he had a remarkable
memory, could retain whatever he read. He was highly respected by all who
knew him; he was ever ready to help the needy and to minister to all who
were in distress; he died at Belle Vernon where he had lived for many
years; his wife died eleven years previous to his death.

                Wiley, 1889, p369
John Ong was born in Fayette City in 1834 and attended school until the
age of nine years when he went into the glass factory as a errand boy.
At the age of fourteen he began work as a glassblower at which he has
worked at various places in Pennsylvania ever since.
His father, Alexander Ong, was a native of Pennsylvania, and was quite
active in advancing the interests of the glass business when that great
industry was in its infancy in Pennsylvania.
John Ong's mother was Catherine Abbott, a daughter of Jeremiah Abbott,
who was one of the early settlers of the county. Mrs Catherine Ong is
still living, and is in the seventy fourth year of her age.
In 1856 the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Mary Lynn,
daughter of Denton Lynn of Fayette county. They have had no children but
have reared and educated five children, whose names are as follows:
William Chess, Harry Safoot, Celia Safoot, Amelia Safoot and May Safoot,
who are all children of Mrs Ong's sister.
John Ong was a private in Company E, One Hundred and Fifty Five
Pennsylvania Volunteers, but was only out about nine months when he was
discharged for disability. He was with his regiment at the battle of
                Fredericksburg.
Jeremiah Abbot, maternal grandfather, was one of the earliest settlers
of the county. Before coming here he owned a large farm east of the
mountains (on the present site of Harrisburg). He was an extensive land
owner before emigrated West; he also followed blacksmithing and was the
first man to do blacksmithing at Cookstown, now Fayette City.
                John Ong is a member of the G A R and K of L.

                L. Evans Lynn Passed Away this Morning.
                L. Evans Lynn, 73 years of age, prominent coal operator and member of one of Fayette county's oldest families, died at his home in Byrer avenue at 9:30 this morning after an illness with pneumonia.  Mr. Lynn had been in failing health for some time and for the past few days his condition had been critical.  The end was not unexpected and all members of the family except one brother in the south were at the bedside.
Mr. Lynn was born November 22, 1847, at the old family homestead at Lynn station near Braznell, and was the son of the late Isaac and Rebecca Evans Lynn.  The family is of Revolutionary stock and the Colonel Andrew Lynn chapter, Daughters of the Revolution, takes its name from one of the ancestral progenitors.  Mr. Lynn early became identified with the coal business owning extensive farms underlaid with the Pittsburgh seam.  He was one of the pioneer independent coal operators of the county and had always been a successful business man.
Mr. Lynn was twice married.  His first wife, who died some 30 years ago, was Miss Nancy Henderson, daughter of Jacob and Margery Harper Henderson of Laurel Hill, Fayette county.  To them were born two children; Jacob H. Lynn of Uniontown and Mrs. Mary R. Dillinger of Pittsburgh.  Mr. Lynn's second wife was ? Florence Holmes of Hopedale, ? who survives.
In addition to his widow and two children, Mr. Lynn is survived by one brother and three sisters, Robert W. Lynn, now living in the south; Miss ? Johnson Lynn, Miss Rachel ? Lynn and Miss Eliza B. Lynn, all of East Berkeley street, Uniontown.  There is one nephew, Holmes ? Lynn, son of Robert W. Lynn, and one granddaughter, Miss Nancy Evans Dillinger, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G. Dillinger of Pittsburgh.  Dr. Dillinger was a major in the medical service during the war and is a former Pittsburgh city councilman.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home in Byrer avenue, with the Rev. E. A. Hodil, pastor of the Third Presbyterian church officiating.  Mr. Lynn was a member of the First Presbyterian church but Dr. W. Ham? Spence is now out of the city. Interment will be private Monday morning in the Brownsville cemetery.  Pallbearers have not yet been decided.

                Subject: Colonel Andrew Lynn

                Dear Ms. Burns:

Thank you for the article on Andrew Lynn in the Monogahela Valley History
website. My great grandmother was Miss Amanda Lynn (married my great
grandfather Benjamin Marion Chalfant in Fayette Co PA; they later moved
to Atchison Co, Kansas in 1882). Amanda was the daughter of Jacob Lynn,
the granddaughter of Isaac Lynn and the great granddaughter of Andrew
                Lynn Jr.

An excellent article. I had never read the story of the locust tree at
the Lynn mansion where General George Washington, Col. Andrew Lynn and
Col. Edward Cook stood and chatted! I doubt if the mansion or the tree
                are still standing.

                Thank you for this article.

                Sincerely,
